13th January 2010

A Very Happy New Year to all. Christmas is well and truly over, and Michael Field has put his Santa Claus outfit back into the mothballs again!

I know I'm a bit late with New Year wishes, but it's a busy time for me, with all the Standing Orders for Fisgard Association subscriptions to be recorded. Anyway, at least the weather has given me the incentive to stay firmly indoors and get the paperwork done.

Many thanks to all those who sent cards or goodwishes, which were much appreciated. I also received Willy Hanna's most welcome news letter. Its good to keep in touch with all those of the 'mechanical discipline'.

It was interesting to see mention of those who I have not seen for many moons, for example Pete Fall, Roger Holker, Twig Wood, Fred Nicholls and others. It would be great if they made contact via the guestbook on this site.

I expect most have had a fair share of this snowy weather. I must say that the novelty has worn off a bit by now! Spare a thought for Pete Penwarden, who has recently moved to Maine USA, from Phoenix, just in time for the winter blasts! Good move Pete - but I must admit the pictures look great.

Meanwhile, in sunny Oz, the temperatures are way way up inthe 30's and more. Still, I never could get my head round a Christmas barbie!

One point of interest - the final class of Artificer Apprentices passes out form HMS Sultan on 14th February. A large contingent from The Old Caledonian Artificer Apprentices Association will be attending, as well as the Fisgard Association. We'll maybe meet up with some old friends there.

All for now

When the weather picks up a bit, I'll come out of hibernation and organise another get together in the Fareham area. It's a while since we had one.

22nd December2009

I was at the funeral of Mick George on Friday, and had the opportunity to meet up with some of our classmates.

Malcolm Howard has kindly sent me a written report which I copy here.

The Funeral Service of Mick George

Mick George age 68 died of Cancer on Sunday the 6th December 2009 and the funeral service took place at the Methodist Church, Lee on Solent at 1200 on the 18th December 2009 followed by a private family committal at the Crematorium, Portchester.

In addition to June his wife and their extended family, which included four grandsons there was a large congregation with six members from Series 31 Caledonia, Mike Davis, Mike Millis, Reg Harnett, John Garrett, Jim Watts and Malcolm Howard. In addition Dave Barclay Series 31 who was an EA(Air), represented The Fisgard Association.

A large number of the class and The Fisgard Association sent condolence cards to June.

I outlined Mick’s medical condition in my last newsletter number 41 (Nov 2009).

Mick served in the RN for 37 years and on completion worked for Vosper Thornycroft in Saudi Arabia. Some of his RN service and Vosper colleagues attended the service.

11th December 2009

It is with deep regret that I have to inform you of the death of ME (Mick) George, who passed away on Sunday 6th December. MIck had fought a brave battle against the dreaded cancer.

We send our deepest sympathy to June his widow, and to all his family.

Mick's funeral is on Friday 18th December, at Methodist Church, High St. Lee on the Solent.

11th December 2009

Pete Penwarden, who recently moved from Phoenix Az to Hallowell in Maine, has had the first winter blizzard. Must be quite a shock to the system from 120 degrees in the summer to the frozen north now!

I've used one of Pete's pictures to wish each and everyone a very Happy Christmas, and health and happiness troughout the coming year.

Keith Miskin and Janet are moving to their new home very close to me at Stubbington. Hope they will be very happy together there. They are off for a cruise very shortly, (probably leave unpacking the furniture till they get back! Good luck you two.

Keep  in touch guys!!

28th November 2009

Greetings all, I got carried away with a guest book entry, when I should have put the info here! Still, here are some  pictures in the Picture Gallery of the island paradise which Brian Healey is lucky enough to call home! The beach is just a short stroll beyond the hills.

Welcome home to Rick & Mary Roughton, who have finally come ashore after 10 years sailing around the globe. We'll miss their tales of their latest adventures. I understand that they intend settling in South Africa. Well, after all their searching I'm sure they will have picked a good spot to settle down!

22nd October 2009

Malcolm Howard paid me a visit today, and presented me with a CD containing loads of photgraphs and a write up on the S31 Caledonia Reunion, held last May.

When I have a quiet moment (I wish!), I'll feature many of these items on this site.

21st October 2009 -- Trafalgar Day!

Two quick pieces of news -

First -  Pete Penwarden has moved home from Phoenix to the state of Maine. Temperature wise that's going from the sublime to the 'cor blimey' I reckon. Had a long chat with Pete over the phone, and he seems really settled in there now. We wish him and Pam every happiness in their new home. (Pictures tomorrow!)

Second - A great surprise today, when we had a visit from Bill and Nancy Kirk,  who are travelling around on holiday from Australia. I must admit that I didn't recognise Bill at first (well - you wouldn't expect to see someone from Oz at your door unannounced would you?) Anyway, the are both looking really well, and we had a good old chin wag about everyone. It was a wonderful visit, and Kay & I were chuffed that they had looked us up for a visit. We took the usual photos, so I'll post a couple into the gallery.

Busy at the moment dealing with the Fisgard Association mail - over 200 letters to handle, with all the subs coming in, plus booking forms for the various functions. Nice to se S31 names amongst the correspondence - Michael Field, Mike Berwick, Dave Williams, Mick George - to name but a few! Well done gang keep them coming. WE are by far the biggest group in the Association.

Hopefully more tomorrow.

Today I received details of Roger's funeral arrangements from Alan his son. I copy them here:

Further to my last broadcast I can now confirm dad’s funeral arrangements. Everyone is welcome to attend and for those of you who are able to make it the details are as follows:

Friday 2 Oct 2009

On completion of church service - Celebration of dad’s life at The Gardens Sports & Leisure Club, 10 Anthony Rd, Torpoint. (http://www.myvillage.com/plymouth/places/49503-the-garden-sports-and-leisure)

  • Dress - informal and comfortable please. Dad did not want a black-suited, dowdy send off.

  • Cards and Flowers – Cards of condolence can be sent to Brenda at home (9 Murdock Rd, Torpoint). We have requested family flowers only please. Anyone wishing to make donations to St Luke’s Hospice in lieu of flowers would be most welcomed.

Hopefully those of you who go straight from church to club will still be able to speak by the time we return from the crematorium!

Kindest Regards

Alan Bond

18th September 2007

It is with great sadness that I have to inform you of the death of our Classmate, Roger Bond. Roger died peacefully in his sleep at 0800 on 17th September, afer a long fight with the Big 'C'.

As you will remember, Roger helped with the formation of this site, by going with his wife Brenda to the old Fisgard location and taking the photographs which feature elsewhere on this web site. They will be a fitting tribute to Roger.

I'm sure that everyone joins me in sending condolences to Brenda and the Bond family.

I'll add details here of funeral arrangements when known.

It is rather fitting that Michael Field visited Roger in the Hospice last Saturday, and was able to spend a while 'swinging the lead'. I'm sure Roger would have enjoyed that.

16th August 2009

Here's Michael Field and Tony Carling at their annual reunion, still looking as young as ever!

Thanks Michael

12th August 2009

Looking forward to a trip to Chatham tomorrow, for the dedication of the Fisgard Memorial in St George's Chapel.Keith Miskin, Malcolm Howard and I will be representing Series 31!

Malcolm Howard sent me his report of the May  reunion of Series 31 Caledonian Apprentices.

Malcolm has kindly allowed me to include his report on this web site. I believe Malcolm has a whole lot of photographs of the occasion, which he will pass on. I will then create a new section to put the words and pictures together.

Series 31 2009 Caledonia Reunion

In January 1959 the ERA’s, OA’s and Shipwright’s of Series 31 joined HMS Caledonia at Rosyth as St Vincent division to commence their seven term part two training.

They were joined by four RNZN Artificer Apprentices who had completed their part one training at HMNZS Philomel in Auckland, NZ.

In May 2009 to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of joining Caledonia a three day reunion weekend had been organized staying at the Pitbauchlie House Hotel, Dunfermline. Unfortunately none of our NZ colleagues were able to attend.

The three day event consisted of a Friday evening ‘meet and greet’ in the bar followed by dinner. Saturday a bus tour of Edinburgh, with a visit to the Royal Yatch, HMS Britania at Leith followed in the evening by a formal dinner in the hotel.

Of the sixty one Art Apps who appear on the April 1961 Series 31 class passing out photograph, twenty nine sat down to dinner with their wives, partners with five of the number being class members attending on their own.

At dinner, absent friends were remembered by name followed by a silence. The dinner that followed was excellent with some good speeches. A sixties disco completed the evening. By midnight most had retired to bed, age takes its toll, apart from a few stalwarts who survived to the early hours

On the Sunday a visit to HMS Caledonia had been arranged hosted by the Warrant Officers and Senior Ratings mess with Warrant Officer Ian Sutcliffe being our guide and tour bus driver. Ian’s tour showed what remains of the buildings from the sixties, some craft training and school buildings have gone, some are empty shells, e.g. the main factory. The swimming pool and the gymnasium on the lower level remain. Swimming pool minus the ‘diving boards’ and the gymnasium the ‘wall bars’. The upper level which was the accommodation blocks, Nelson Hall, dining halls, administration blocks, have gone along with some of the school buildings, and been replaced with new along with a resited quaterdeck. The school block buildings that remain along with the laboratory block are used by organizations with RN connections. The laboratory block was built in 1958 to enable the Ordinary National Certificate syllabus experiments to be undertaken. The ONC course had commenced with Series 28, Drake division. This was the start of the eleven term artificer apprentice shore training followed by a term at sea before being rated third class, leading rate.

Caledonia’s role now is to act as an accommodation establishment for ships in refit in Rosyth dockyard, a base for sea cadets and other organizations with RN connections. Some Royal Marines are based there. HMS Cochrane which was the Rosyth shore establishment was decommissioned some time ago and demolished.

To mark the fiftieth anniversary permission had been sought from Caledonia’s commanding officer to plant a commemorative Rowan tree along with an HMS Caledonia bronze ships badge with inscription plate on a mounting assembly.

The inscription plate reads,

THIS MEMORIAL TREE AND SHIPS BADGE ARE DEDICATED TO REMEMBER ALL

ROYAL NAVY AND ROYAL NEW ZEALAND NAVY ARTIFICER APPRENTICES WHO TRAINED AT HMS CALEDONIA, ROSYTH.

THIS MEMORIAL WAS PRESENTED BY MEMBERS OF

SERIES 31 ARTIFICER APPRENTICES ST VINCENT DIVISION,

HMS CALEDONIA, JANUARY 1959 TO APRIL 1961

ON THE OCCASION OF THEIR 2009 REUNION

The reunion was enjoyed by all. It was mentioned that the next reunion in five years time, ‘God willing’ will take place in Antigua organized by Mick Rose, a class member and dedicated Yatch skipper, who lives there.

As a foot note I must mention three names. Firstly, David Williamson, who commenced the organization of the reunion but died of Asbestosis. David’s sterling efforts got the ball rolling. Then Alastair Thomson and his wife Heather took over the task, with Heather as the driving force. Heather and Alistair, residents of Edinburgh, did a marvelous job of organizing the hotel and dinners, the Edinburgh tour, the Caledonia visit and planting the tree and erecting the memorial plaque. A huge thanks has gone to them with Heather being presented with a bouquet at the formal dinner. David’s widow was not forgotten, and was sent a commemorative bouquet on behalf of the class.

Friday 24th July 2009

I received an email from Rick and Mary Roughton today, who are nearing the end of their epic 10 year circumnavigation. They are currently in Greece.

Rick expressed his sadness in hearing of Roger's setback, and attached a letter and photographs for me to forward to Roger, with his and Mary's sincere good wishes. This I have done, and I copy here a resume of Rick's email to me

We are at the moment in Samos Greece in the town of Pythagriou awaiting the present ‘Meltemi’ to blow through so that we can do a quick dash through the islands to Malta to complete our circumnavigation and then on our return trip, when the winds should be kinder, we will linger on some of the islands before heading back to Turkey for the winter and a long rest.  It’s been a heavy year from Thailand, but very interesting.

Monday 20th July 2009

Today I received the following email from Alan Bond, Roger's son. Can we as his classmates come to Roger's aid now?

"As you probably know dad (Rog) has been battling with cancer for the past 2 years or so. Unfortunately he took a bad turn last Tuesday and was rushed to hospital. It appeared he had suffered some sort of stroke or seizure. Upon investigation it was found that this was due to the cancer having spread to his brain where now resides a squash ball sized tumour. There is nothing that can be done to remove it and this story does not have a good outcome I am afraid to say.

He is however, perfectly lucid (if this was ever possible!) and has control over all bodily functions that can be reasonably expected of a man of his years, although slightly desperate for a pint or decent glass of wine I should expect! He is currently in Bay F of Brent ward in Derriford Hospital, Plymouth. For those of you that are local and can spare time to visit I know he is glad of all contact. Hospital visiting times are 1400-2000 daily. If you are too far away then he has a bedside phone (07003 22 7186) and again, I know he would be glad to speak to you. If you would like to co-ordinate your visiting/phone calls you can call Brenda on 01752 813724.

We are trying to set up e-mail for him at his bedside but it is taking a while so I will be regularly checking his e-mails for him at home. I am happy to print out messages and take them to him if required.

We hope he will be out of hospital by the end of next week but this is treatment dependent and even then we do not know whether he will be back at home or in St Lukes Hospice.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I urge you please, if you are a friend of his, please get in touch. We do not know how long we have left with him."

Tuesday 14th July 2009

I know that we in the UK often complain about the weather, but just look at the temperature in Phoenix Arizona. Pete Penwarden emailed me this picture today.

As Pete says - it's a dry heat!

Monday 6th July 2009

Had an email from Peter, and since then a phone call from Phoenix. He said he had a great time here during his tour of his old haunts! He sent a couple of pictures, from a mini- reunion with Dave Hodges and Sid Wareham

Dave Hodges looking at home on his own patch

Pete Penwarden meets Dave and Annette Hodges, and Sid and Lyn Wareham.

Wednesday 6th May 2009

Well, on Monday I met Pete Penwarden at Heathrow - along with enough luggage to support Ark Royal's ships company! Having safely transported him back to Stubbington, he then went about the task of trying to beat jet- lag. In other words he got his head down!

All is well now, and last night we met up in Fareham for a mini-reunion. Now regular readers will know that we usually meet at the Golden Lion in Fareham. However, I thought this time we'd go a bit up market and meet at the Red Lion Hotel in Fareham-big mistake!!

I should have realised that Tiffs can't cope with sudden changes to routine, so in spite of me phoning and telling everyone of the new meeting place, and publishing it here in two places, some folk still got it wrong!

Pete & I went to the Red Lion, to be followed by Keith Miskin, John Rowsell and Hugh Upward. We had a jar or two and a chat, but I did think the turn out was a bit poor.

However, at 2100 Chris Madden, Trev Benson and Graham Thornton finally arrived, after going to the GOLDEN lion and wondering where we all were!

Talk about couldn't organise a p*** up in a brewery!

However we soon got down to the business in hand and had a very enjoyable evening, and of course the tales of Fisgard days and subsequent Fleet activities were soon flowing thick and fast.

Pete sends his best regards to all.

Here's a couple of photos.

Same as above, but with Pete Penwarden extreme right, and Hugh taking the picture.

22nd April

Hi all,

It's been too long since I added anything to this site, so I'll try and put that right.

I had a chat with Dave Hodges via phone yesterday. He is trying to trace 'AJ' Ellsmore- Creed. He's even got his friendly detective on the case, but no luck so far. Can anyone help?

I recently received Will Hanna's news letter, which I always look forward to receiving.Although intended for the Caledonian Crew its good to keep up with events.Of course, there are tributes to Dave Williamson, who was so active in arranging reunions etc. He will be missed.

I've also been in contact with Pete Penwarden over in Phoenix. Pete is coming to UK for about 4 months, and hopes to meet up with a load of old friends from S31.

For a start, I'm picking him up from Heathrow on 4th may, and he will stay with me for a few days. I thought this would be an ideal time for us to have a mini-reunion in Fareham, so lets make a date!

TUESDAY 5TH MAY AT THE RED LION FAREHAM, AT 7.30 ONWARDS.

I've been updating the Fisgard Association database today, and I'm delighted to see that there are 45 members of our series in the Association, which makes us the biggest group by far.

Glad to see that my faithful correspondents Michael Field and David Phillips keep the guestbook going! I pay £25 a year for this website, so I'm glad that it still gets used occasionally. It would be nice to get a few ditties, experiences, or even your holiday and family photos and stories include. You send 'em- I'll publish 'em!
I also have a large database of addresses for our Series, and there is a good chance that I can help if you are looking to make contact with someone. Give it a try.
I best get back to the garden now - Kay has given me tasks before she went off to a friends, so I'd better finish before she gets back! More anon

7th March 2009

I heard today, via Malcolm Howard, of the very sad death of David Williamson, Grenville, who passed away on 19th February, after losing the battle with lung cancer. Dave was particularly active within the ex-Caledonian Series 31 members, indeed he was planning a big get- together this year. I'm sure you will all join me in sending sincere condolences to Valerie and all Dave's family.

12th February 2009

from john king S31

Good news indeed!

8th February 2009

I've just received an email from Pete Penwarden, attaching the email he sent and the reply from Bill Kirk in Australia. I've copied it here for all those who know Bill, and I'm sure will be thinking of him and Nancy at this worrying time.

Hi Bill,

Are you anywhere near those wildfires?

Pete Penwarden

Hi Pete,

Yes, the fires are just up the road, a few kilometers away,
fortunately the wind is currently driving them away from us.

Yesterday , Saturday, it was unreal, close to 50 degrees centigrade.
Nancy found out today, her employer prior to her retiring two years ago, was
killed in the fires yesterday. Very sad, and it proves how fragile life is,
when you try and fight nature.

Just hope the situation does not get any worse, already over 60
lives lost and around 700 homes.

Speak to you again soon.

Bill.

You and Nancy are in our thoughts Bill - we trust that you will come through this terrible event safely.
Please keep in touch.

1st January 2009

May I take this opportunity to wish everyone of Series 31 a very happy, healthy and prosperous New Year, wherever you are.

Thanks for your support over the past year - even if it's just by visiting this site occasionally!

Don't forget that contributions of photographs, stories etc are always welcome.

23rd November 2008

I've received 17 new photographs from Doug Jerram plus some very useful name up-dates.I'm always grateful to receive more pictures, stories etc, Have a look in the Photographs & Magazines section. Many thanks Doug.

9th November 2008

Kay and I have just returned from a great tour of Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. We were lucky enough to be invited to spend a few days with Pete and Pam Penwarden at their beautiful home in Phoenix. Pete has lived in the States for many years, and now having made contact with so many old friends at the 50th Anniversary he is in regular contact with a number of his old mates.

We had a great  time, and the weather was fine for we Brits, but on the chilly side for the locals (80 plus degrees!).We watched the presidential election taking place whilst we were there - (please DON'T mention obama to Pete!)

Here are a few pictures of our visit.

Pam, Kay and friend Nicole from Maine

 Pete, Kay, Pam and I

 Old comrades!

14th October 2008

Received a jovial greeting from friend Michael Field tonight. He has just had his yearly visit from Tony Carling, and the following photograph shows what a smooth couple they are!

Thanks Michael

15th September 2008

Just returned from Plymouth, where the annual Green & White dinner was held in the New Continental Hotel, in Millbay Road by the Hoe. It was a great weekend, and supported by a total of 184 ex Tiffs and their ladies.

On Saturday we were treated to a tour of Plymouth dockyard, and a visit to their excellent museum. During the trip we visited the Rope sheds, and were surprised to see the old Fisgard clock, complete with dolphins and a pair of hands (don't know what vintage the hands were, certainly not the originals!)

The dockyard tour was followed by a bus trip to HMS Raleigh for lunch,(Fisgard gates are still at Raleigh, and the cannon and figure head are still there too), after which time we were taken onto the Fisgard site (now known as the Trevol Business Park.) We were able to identify the main gate, and main road and from these points gain our bearings to look for other remains. The West side workshops, Sid Cownden's empire are still in evidence, as is the base of the CPO's Mess. The best preserved are East side huts, with the majority still standing. Exmouth and Froby have been converted for business use, ,but Grenville and Hawke arre almost as original. The only change being the fitting of double glazing. This may have been done before Fisgard closed - anyone know?

Saturday evening was the main event - the Green & White. It was combined this year with our 'sprogs' (Series 34) reunion. A very good meal and a most enjoyable evening.

Series 31 were well represented, with the following smart ex Tiffs in attendance with their ladies:

Roger Bond, Trev Benson, Michael Field, Fred Flack,Les Chantler, Phil Rosier, Dirk Barclay, Pete Spencer

 Here's a couple of pictures:

Pat & Michael Field, Doris and Fred Flack

10th August 2008

Hi all.

Sorry its been a bit quiet on the site of late. My excuse is I've been on holiday in ?sunny Cornwall with the grandchildren, which is a bit high maintenance, but enjoyable. Returned home, and two days later the other grandchildren arrived. All is now peaceful once more, but I have lots to catch up with.

Nice to see Keith Miskin, Graham Thornton and Trevor Benson (all S31),at the Fisgard lunch on Friday.

I've added a selection of 'funnies' to the Just for a Laugh page. I'm getting loads of these sent in - many thanks.

I'd like some more pictures of apprentice-ship days if anyone still has any that I could use on the site I'd love to share them with you.

Nice to see some chatting in the guest book - Hi Bill Kirk - when are you going to get your broadband sorted?!!

23rd July

Here's an update on the planned 2009 reunion from Dave Williamson

Our Caledonia gathering on the weekend of 16 May 2009 at Dunfermline now has 72 people attending the dinner on the Saturday evening including some of our RNZN members. We plan to visit HMS Caledonia on the Sunday and to plant a tree in memory of all who trained at Caledonia. So if you have not yet signed up don't miss a good weekend

20th July

Had a couple of emails from Dave & Val Williamson, after their return from their holilday in US. Added one contribution into Just for a Laugh.

Nice to see an entry from Bill in the guestbook - glad you are still dropping in Bill - best regards to Nancy.

16th June.

Have a look at Just for a Laugh page - a good one from Tom Mead.

6th June

I received a copy of a very newsy letter from Ric and Mary Roughton today. They are currently in Phuket, Thailand, having visitsed China, Malaya and many other exotic places.

I see from the address list that many others have received  it also, but if you would like a copy let me know.

 Well, he was an REA!

 Ric and Mary in China.

3rd June 2008

A couple of good stories from Michael F and Pete.

21st May

Michael Field has added a joke to 'Just for a laugh'

I had a very nice email from Brian Healey in New Zealand yesterday. Brian is still working(?) with the NZ navy, and is currently watch-keeping on Great Barrier Island in the north of NZ.

12th May 2008

A good joke from Pete Penwarden added to 'Just for a Laugh' page.

9th May 2008

By way of a trial I've set up a blog page called 'Have your say', so you can add what you like to this section - jokes stories etc.- give it a go!!

8th May 2008

I'm trying a new idea. So many folk send in jokes etc.. by email, that I've set up a new page called 'Just for a Laugh', where I'll copy a selection of jokes received. If you have any, email to me as usual.

6th May 2008

Jim Hamilton sent an interesting email yesterday, copied below:

Went to see Neil Sedaka on Saturday
night. It brought back memories of polishing
floors at Fisgard with the records playing.
Kept saying to Freda "polished floors to that"
She said she will have to buy some of his records.
I told her that the urge to polish floors is long gone.
One of the more pleasant memories of Fisgard.
It was good to see the floor shine when we finished.
A job well done and a feeling of satisfaction.
Have a good day.
Jim

Anyone else associate particular songs/artists with events at Fisgard? Email me at

 and I'll include your story.

30th April 2008

This from Len Borrowdale this morning - Good one Len!

New Ships For The Royal Navy

Details have been released regarding Britain's next generation of fighting ships: the Royal Navy is proud of the cutting edge capability of the fleet of Type 45 destroyers.

Costing £750 million, they have been designed to meet the needs of the 21st century; in addition to state of the art technology, weaponry, and guidance systems, the ships will comply with the very latest employment, equality, health & safety and human rights legislation.
They will be able to remain at sea for several months and positively bristle with facilities. For instance, the new user friendly crow's nest comes equipped with wheelchair access. Live ammunition has been replaced with paintballs to reduce the risk of anyone getting hurt and to cut down on the number of compensation claims. Stress councillors and lawyers will be on duty 24hrs a day, and each ship will have it's own onboard industrial tribunal.
The crew will be 50/50 men and women, and balanced in accordance with the latest Home Office directives on race, gender, sexuality and disability. Sailors will only have to work a maximum of 37hrs per week in line with Brussels Health & Safety rules even in wartime!
All bunks will be double occupancy, and the destroyers will all come equipped with a maternity ward and creche, situated on the same deck as the Gay Disco.
Tobacco will be banned throughout the ship, but cannabis will be allowed in the mess. The Royal Navy is eager to shed its traditional reputation for "Rum, Bum and the lash" ; out goes the occasional rum ration which is to be replaced by Perrier water, although sodomy remains this has now been extended to include all ratings under 18. The lash will still be available but only by request.
Condoms can be obtained from the Bosun in a variety of flavours, except Capstan Full Strength.
Saluting officers has been abolished because it is elitist, it is to be replaced by the more informal "Hello Sailor" .
All notices on boards will be printed in 37 different languages and braille.

Crew members will no longer be required to ask permission to grow beards or moustaches, even the women.
The MOD is working on a new "Non specific" flag based on the controversial British Airways "Ethnic" tailfin design, because the white ensign is considered to be offensive to minorities.
Sea Trials are expected to take place soon, when the first of the new destroyers HMS Cautious, sets out on her maiden mission it will be escorting boat loads of illegal immigrants across the channel to ports on the south coast.
The ship is due to be launched soon in a ceremony conducted by Captain Hook from the Finsbury P ark Mosque who will break a petrol bomb over the hull. The ship will gently slide into the water to the tune of "In the Navy" by the Village People played by the Royal Marines.
The Prime Minister said that "While the ships reflected the very latest of modern thinking they were also capable of being up graded to comply with any new legislation. His final words were "Britain never, never waives the rules!"

 21st April 2008

I received a very welcome email from Roger Bond -Hi Roger.

He makes the following comments:

I was not surprised to read that Chris Chitty and Mick Rose are both resident in Antigua. Within weeks of joining Fisgard they had discovered their passion for sailing and were inseparable and as David recalls, were

seldom seen without Jack knife and plimsolls. I hope Mick makes a full and speedy recovery from his recent attack. He was however, very lucky not to receive a similar assault some 50 years ago. I don’t know where

he got the money from but one Saturday he arrived back in Crusader Hut with a long playing record of South Pacific. These new fangled things cost almost a fortnight’s wages so it was not surprising that it was the

only LP in the hut. Consequently it was played over and over again and there were more than a few murmurs going around that vigilante action would soon follow.

There was a third member of the sailing fraternity that I have heard no mention of over the years, I think he was called Bill Lewis, does anyone have any news of him?

Can anyone help?

16th April

Jim Hamilton over in Oz has come up with missing names for the Anson New Entry photo.

Jim suggests: #4 is DJ Smith, #11 is A Vincent, #14 is CJ Soper, # 22 is RN Taylor and # 27 is AH Thomas.

Can anyone confirm these names? If no reply after a while I'll add them to the photo.

12th April

A good day today! Chris Chitty sent in some new photographs - a fine one of the S31 reunion in New Zealand. These photos, plus one of Bob Jones from David Phillips have been added to 'Magazines and Photographs' page. David has been recalling memories from Collingwood days - see these in 'Down Memory Lane'. If you can add anything that would be great. Just email your contributions to me.

11th April

At Saint Mary's Catholic Church they have a weekly husband's marriage seminar. At the session last week, the Priest asked Luigi, who was approaching his 50th wedding anniversary, to take a few minutes and share some insight into how he had managed to stay married to the same woman all these years. Luigi replied to the assembled husbands, "Well, I've a tried to treata her nice, spenda the money on her, but best is that I tooka her to Italy for our 20th anniversary!" The Priest responded, "Luigi, you are an amazing inspiration to all the husbands here! Please tell us what you are planning for your wife for your 50th anniversary." Luigi proudly replied, "I'm a gonna go and get her."

10th April

I received a very welcome email from Chris Chitty in Antigua today, which I'll copy as its of general interest I'm sure.

Feeling a little guilty that I have not posted any anecdotal stories or sent any more fotis. Will try to rectify that now that I'm not inundated with builders or snowed under with writing for angry publishers looking to make deadlines.

My first book has now been published and an anthology I am contracted for is almost complete so here we go.

Tony and Liz Carling came out to Antigua to stay with us for two weeks before Easter. Mike Rose only lives down the road from me in English Harbour so we had a very mini S31 reunion at my house. Photo attached.

Three nights ago Mike Rose disturbed a burglar and was stabbed five times for his troubles. He was rushed to hospital in a critical state but I am pleased to tell you that he left intensive care today and is calling for a Tot so I guess he is on the mend. Pledged money for a reward has passed 20,000 pounds, he is pretty popular here. The police of course are doing nothing. Excuse, they don't have the man power to investigate burglaries, er what about the grievous bodily harm, I guess it's not important here.

Good to know that Mike is making a good recovery - we wish him well.

Also, Len Borrowdale is back in the South, so we'll have to have another get together - watch this space!

I'm always glad to get new material to keep this site interesting, so turn out your old photo albums etc.!

 The Antigua mini-reunion.

27th March

Guys - I've just heard that the latest issue of Fisgardian has hit the streets, and there is a full report of our 50th Anniversary reunion featured across two pages!

12th March

Well, we had a mini reunion of sorts last night. Trev Benson, Graham Thornton and Phil Rosier turned up, but Hugh Upward missed the boat, and Reg Harnett emailed me to say that he and Jim Watts ended up at the wrong pub!! John Rowsell had already sent apologies - he is in America, and Fred Bunce emailed to say he had returned to Spain! The weather was pretty bad last night, which didn't do much to encourage folk out of their warm houses. Hey, but we'll try again later.

We had a good evening, and of course immediately fell into recalling all the old Fisgard and naval events, and remembering friends from the past. I understand from Reg that he and Jim did exactly the same in the Red Lion!

29th February

I was at the Fleet Air Arm Association meeting at Lee on Solent last night. Met up with a good collection of ex Tiffs of all series, and Keith Miskin, Graham Thornton and Phil Rosier, all of S31. We've decided its time for another mini - reunion. We'll meet at the Golden Lion in High St. Fareham, on Tuesday 11th March, at 19.30 ish. We would love to see as many of you there as can make it.

25th February

There is a good picture of the S32 AAs passing out from HMS Condor on the Fisgard web site today. I did a count, and the majority of the group started out in Series 31.!  I guess that was true for most trades, unless I'm mistaken?

Watch out too for a picture of young Bill Kirk at a Tiffs reunion in Melbourne.

21st February

I had an interesting email from Ron Birt (Series 30) (Blake) today, which might be of interest to some, concerning the late Mick Cannon. I'll copy it here:

Mick and I joined Fisgard as Class 30 (May 57?), Mick was in Duncan, myself
in Blake. Mick went on to be commissioned and the last I saw of him was as
an Engineer Lieutenant on the mighty 'Ark'. He was highly thought of by all.
I was just scrolling through Google and came across your site.
Very entertaining. I went to the reunion but as I didn't dip back until
9 class (the dreaded test job) S31 weren't really my class. Regards Ron

Thanks for that Ron - Nice to see that the site brings responses from unexpected quarters!

13th February

Had a phone call from John King this morning. He is in fine form, after completing his Chemo and having been given the 'all clear'. Great news indeed. John is going to help in providing the missing names in the Exmouth New Entries photograph. I've improved on the Caley photo presentation by linking them to a Picasa site, as I have with others. Seems to be better. I received another news letter from Willy this morning. Great stuff Willy, thanks.

12th February

Caledonia Corner has now been added. The photographs are temporary, and quality will be improved and names added  later.

10th February 2008

Hi everyone.

Kay and I have just returned from our wonderful trip to New Zealand, and its going to be a little while to get back into routine! One highlight of the tour was meeting Brian Healey (S31 Frobisher), and his lovely wife Pam. We had dinner together in Auckland and of course there was much mulling over times past. I gave Brian the good wishes of all who remembered him in the UK. I'll add a couple of photographs to the site soon.

On my return, I received a very welcome package from Willy Hanna. Willy has included some photogrraphs of the Caley contingent S31 passing out (April 1961), and of their 40th and 45th reunions. These are wonderful, and will form part of a 'Caledonian Corner', to be added to this web site.

In addition, Willy has taken a great deal of trouble to correct the identities of folk shown in some of our 50th Reunion photos, and for that I'm very grateful. It will take me a ittle time to make all the corrections, but it will be good to put the right names to the right faces!

He has also pointed out that the map showing current whereabouts of S31 members is some 30 years out of date! Apparently, Cumberland, Westmoreland and a bit of N Lancashire combined to form an area called CUMBRIA. As someone who has spent the last 50 years south of Watford this came a a bit of a revelation! OK Willy, I'll get round to changing it, and whilst about it DP, I'll even change the page heading!

I am now a subscriber to Willy's newsletters, so I can keep abreast of our St Vincent Div colleagues. I'm sure that I'll be able to include some of Willy''s material onto the web site.

David Williamson is planning a 50th Anniversary for those of Series 31 who joined Caledonia in 1959. David has sent me details, and I will include these to help 'spread the word'.

Bill Kirk sent me an email, which I picked up iin NZ. He complains that there is not much input to this web site from you guys. I've challenged Bill to write a report on a Tiffs reunion planned to take place in Oz in February.

That's it for now, but keep watching out for the changes  during the next couple of weeks.

It's good to be back!

7th January

New photograph of S32 and S31 at Arbroath January 1962 added.

Sad to announce the death of BG (George) Skinner, (Grenville), on 23rd October 2007, after a short illness. This message was relayed to me by his son, Richard

1st January 2008

Happy New Year to one and all!

30th December

Hi all - Hope you all had a great Christmas, as I certainly did. Tomorrow night we'll be celebrating the coming year, so this will be the last entry in 2007. Once again, I thank everyone for their comments and inputs which have made this web site viable, and which I hope will grow in the coming year. May we all be blessed with good health and good fortune in 2008.Kay and I will be off to New Zealand on 11th January till 8th February ( a visit postponed from last year due to Kay breaking her ankle a week before departure date!) I hope to still keep the site running during our travels.

I've moved 'Santa' Michael Field to a more permanent home in the Magazines & photographs page.

23rd December

Father Christmas added to home page!

20th December

Home page layout changed for 2008.

18th December

I had a very nice letter from Dave Hodges yesterday - Dave is still trying to trace some of those who didn't come to the re-union! He says that we ought to provide short CVs for every member of S31. Some task Dave! I know that a couple of people have done that, ready to add to the archives, but have decided to hang on for a better response.

Dave doesn't do the internet, but has managed to keep inn touch with Colin Acreman, Garth Sanders, Tony Privett and Ric Roughton, so he is doing well.

Also received a card from Doug Jerram, and also from Fred Bunce. Many thanks to them.

10th December

A new page 'Where are we now?' added, showing the known locations of S31 members in mainland UK. If you can add to the list, please let me know.

9th December

Newspaper clipping regarding Bob Sproston's 'Apprentice of the Year' award. Kindly supplied by John Stupples.

23rd November

Just when I thought I'd collected all the good things - look what has turned up! A heart-rending tale of an intrepid bunch of Series 31's finest on exped.

Read Michael Field's gripping report (typed by his own fair hand) just added to the magazines and photographs page

9th November

Chris Chitty's photo added to Dad's Navy page.

Fisgard Association AGM in the Royal Mariners Club, Portsmouth. Tomorrow 10th Nov at 10.30am. See you there?

8th November

We had our mini reunion in Fareham on Tuesday. Five of us turned up - Dirk, Trev Benson, Keith Miskin,Graham Thornton, John Rowsell. We had a good natter over a couple of pints.

I've added two more of David Phillips' collection of magazines to the site, and also rearranged them, so one link takes you to the magazine Library. Also started adding pictures from Chris Chitty's collection. More to come.

31st October

Nice to see that Bill and Nancy Kirk have arrived  safely back in Australia. It was great to see you both, and many thanks for making such an effort to join in the fun. I must say that life in the colonies has suited you well Bill -it must be the clean air and good living that's kept you so young!

Today I've added another magazine to the site, once again courtesy of David Phillips. Take a look - you might see something you recognise.(In truth, I didn't even remember that we had a mag at Collingwood.) I remembered Fisgards, as I won a whole 5/- for my cartoon which were printed in it!

Does anyone have any other photographs to add to our pages?

29th October

Exchanged a couple of emails with Chris Chitty (ex Collingwood) today. Chris is slumming it in the sun in Antigua. Chris is Vice Commadore of the Jolly Harbour Yacht Club, and is busy organising two major regattas. Come to think of it - I guess this would be a good location for a 55th Reunion! Any takers? There's room for 50 on the deck, and the catering is in very capable hands. Chris still has time to write books, and his first is due out in the spring. We'll have to keep an eye out for it Chris.

Great to hear from you.

27th October

Just added the Fisgard Magazine for Summer 1959. It's a little past the time of our stay at Fisgard, but makes interesting reading. Another from the library of David Phillips, with thanks.

25th October

Mini reunion notes corrected. It should be the Golden Lion High Street Fareham! Thanks for that Kieth!

23rd October

Picture of Tony Carling and Michael Field added to Dad's Navy album.

Just been chatting to Keith Miskin, and we felt its time to have another mini reunion - so how about Tuesday 6th November at the Golden Lion, High Street, Fareham - See you there?

16th October

As a trial, I've added a new Forum page called 'Chatterbox'. Please use it for whatever purpose you like, general interests, making contacts, reporting news - start whatever new topic you like. (As long as you don't fall foul of the law!)

10th October

I have just added the Fisgard Magazine for Christmas 1957 -our first at Fisgard! This was kindly scanned for me by David Phillips. An interesting edition - I won the princely sum of 5/- for my cartoon entries!

I have also rearranged the format for presenting these magazines, and have re-named the page 'Photos from the Past' to 'Magazines and Photographs'.

4th October

Today I received a nice letter from Alan Brooks,(Grenville). Al was unable to make the reunion, as he had already booked a touring holiday. I sent him some pictures, but he was sad to discover that everyone else seems to have aged as much as he has!

Quite by chance, an entry in the guestbook from John Ellis (Series 28), followed by a bit of guesswork , enabled me to be in contact with my old 'sprogmaster' from 50 years ago! Just shows, they always catch up with you in the end! He was a very nice guy, and we got on well. He's actually going to join the FA, so he'll be able to keep up with his own series.

Can anyone else remember their sprogmasters, and say where they are now?

Sandy Sanders kindly gave me his collection of photographs to scan. I've now added them to the Photos from the Past page. I'll add some names when I have chance!

27th September

Some photos of the Sultan visit can be viewed in the Reunion Photo gallery. Thanks Tom.

I've also copied Willy Hanna's report on the reunion, as featured in the Caledonia Newsletter. Thanks Willy.

26th September

Ced Fray has kindly sent me the Fisgard Magazine for Summer 1957. I have now scanned it, and you'll find the link on the Photos from the Past page.

If anyone has the Christmas 1957, or 1958 editions I could borrow to scan, I'd be most grateful.

25th September

Very nice to see Roger Bond's entry in the guest book. Good to know you are getting your strength back - keep it up young man!

I've added some photos from Malcolm Wellington's collection to the 'Photos from the Past' page.

20th September

I've added names to the composite picture on 50th anniversary page. I do hope I've got them right - please tell me if you see anything incorrect.

If you would like a copy of this collage, let me know and I'll send you one.

19th September

Good news! I received a letter from Roger Bond today, telling me that he is now out of hospital and making steady progress. He was very pleased to receive the 'get well' card which we all signed, and is determined to come to the next Green & White dinner/dance, in Plymouth, on Saturday 13th Sept 2008.

Changes to the site today . I have provided a link to 'picsaweb, which is an on line photo gallery. Click the link at the head of the 50th Anniversary page, and you will see albums of all the weekend's photgraphs.

Similarly, if you go to 'Photos from the past', a link will take you to a copy of the Fisgard Magazine of Easter 1958! That makes interesting reading.

If this works out, I'll transfer all of the photographs to that site, as it will help keep things in order.

17th September

Progress!

I've been putting together a report of the reunion weekend, and have added the first attempt to the site. What do you think? If you have any anecdotes from the evening please let me have them. Also, I've added a link to my picsaweb album, which shows all of the photos of the weekend that I have taken or have been given. Next task is to identify them all, and give captions.

I'm now ready to start scanning some of the material that I've been loaned in order to return it to its rightful owners asap!

12th september

I've stared to reorganise the site now that the weekend is over. I'm going to feature a full chronological (Wow!) report of all the weekend activities. Willy Hanna has written an excellent account in his news letter, which I'm sure many of you receive.

If you have any photographs that I can use on the site, please send me a copy.

I also have many, many photos of Fisgard days to scan. This will take a little while, but be assured I shall do it, and you will get the piccies back!

9th September

Well, 50 years ago! How wonderful it was to see so many old friends united once again over the weekend. Thanks to everyone for supporting us - you were great. Have a large drink to celebrate, and keep in touch with each and everyone of us - CHEERS!!

4th September

Well, all lists for the reunion functions are now closed. The seating plans have been arranged by the Fisgard Association Social Secretary. All lists have been submitted to the various establishments for security - so now I can sit back and relax (as if!!). The weather forecast is excellent for this coming weekend - better than the miserable weather we had in Torpoint 50 years ago! Anyway, we're looking forward to meeting you all - so lets have a good time!

29th August

Final instructions added to Notice Board

25th August

I'm back! Back to some fine sunny weather - it was cr**p in France!

Its with sadness that I have to report another ex-classmate who has crossed the bar. Bruce Jennings (Duncan), died on 22nd January 2007. This sad news forwarded by David Williamson.

I've received an email from Brian Hanney in Canada. Brian regrets that for personal reasons he cannot join us. However, he suggested each of us, especially those not attending the reunion, could send a message, perhaps a short biography of their lives since joining the RN. I'll have a display board at the reunion and we could add any messages to it.

Eventually I'll add them to the web site.

19th August

Guys, I'm going to France for a few days - back on Friday. If you have any queries, or wish to add your name to the list of attendees, please contact Keith Miskin. Keith can be reached on 01489 581903.

17th August

A very fruitful day today. David Williamson put me in contact with Peter Brading (Frobisher), in France. I had a chat with him about old times (Like you do!). I don't think he will be coming, as he attended the S31 reunion in New Zealand - but you never know, we might tempt him yet!

Later this evening I had an email from Mike Berwick (also Froby). Trevor Armstrong had pointed Mike in the right direction, and he has joined the Association and will be coming to the Green & White with his wife,Tessa. A big welcome to you both.

Had a great lunch out with 50-ish people from the Fisgard Association, (organised as a separate group), at the Bat & Ball in Hambledon. I'm sure we will be able to do something similar in the future for Series 31, especially as we have so many members!

15th August.

We had a great turn-out for our mini reunion in Fareham last night. The rollcall was an impressive eleven of us, that's Les Chantler, Chris Madden, Lenny Borrowdale, Graham Thornton, Keith Miskin, John Rowsell, Brian Harmsworth, Peter Redmond, Trevor Benson, Hugh Upward and yours truely! We drank some beer and swapped a few yarns, and had a very enjoyable time.

You might like to check who lives in your area, and try and have a get together, I recommend it.

14th August

Welcome to Bryan & Margaret Wood, with whom we have now regained contact! I've added their names to the list on the Notice Board, and also updated the hotel bookings list - do check to make sure we've booked you as requested! Looking forward to meeting some of you at the mini reunion in Fareham tonight.

11th August

Still looking for the stragglers to come and join us. Had an email from Trevor Armstrong tonight, so hopefully he will be joining us for the reunion. I can take bookings for the Green & White right up to the end of this month, but the Saturday Night at Nelson will have to close by 28th August, as I have to submit the total list for security. For interest, there are currently 87 in the S31 party for the Green & White, and 73 for the Nelson evening.Pretty good, but still room for more!

There are now 53 members of Series 31 who are members of the Fisgard Association. This is terrific, and beats any other series hands down. This will make it so much easier to contact people for the 55th Anniversary!

If anyone who is unable to attend would like to submit a message/video, please contact me and we'll put on a display at the Reunion at Nelson.

Please bring along any photographs of Fisgard days that you have, and I'll scan them for the website.

10th August

Notice board attendance numbers revised.

7th August

The postie did me proud this morning, as he delivered completed forms from Peter Redmond, Reg Harnett, Tony Colyer and Martyn Paine. It was like Christmas. Many thanks lads - but still room for a few more!

Martyn didn't start out with us in S31, but decided that he liked us so much that he stayed behind in 4 Class and enabled us to catch up with him! You are very welcome Martyn & Julie.

5th August

Another photo added to David Phillips' collection - The late Nige Gough in civvies in Bognor.

4th August

About a dozen new Blake photos added to Photos from the Past, under David Phillips' collection.

2nd August

I've added a table to the Notice Board, detailing the hotel reservations Keith has made for those who requested accomodation. Please check, and let us no if NOT correct.

Also, a note added re a mini reunion on Tuesday 14th August.

Today's contact was Alan Sparkes of Blake Division, (arranged via David Phillips.) Thanks for that. Alan is very keen to attend, and I have forwarded booking forms to him. Has anyone other contacts whom we might approach?

This morning I went to HMS Nelson, to finalise arrangements with The Mess Manager, Spike Hughes. Everything is now done - I think! It just remains for the last few stragglers to make contact with us to make sure they arre included in the party of a lifetime!!

1st August

Had a visit from Trev Benson today, a pleasant surprise. He will be coming to the reunion. Welcome Trev & Elizabeth.

31st July

Have a look at the Notice Board you Ex Caley guys! David Williamson needs your support.

27th July

Delighted to have received word from Reg Harnett that he will be attending the reunion, and great news that Tony and Maureen Colyer (Anson) will also be coming. The numbers are growing now!

23rd July

Some more photos from Roger's collection added to the site. Roger also sent others, including a series of hockey team photos. I've decided to pass these on (with Roger's approval),for inclusion on the Fisgard Association website, as they are for more general interest.

I regret to say that Bob Woodman, (Hawke Division), due to ill health, does not feel able to attend the reunion. I am sure that all wish him the very best for the future.

Does anyone know how I can contact Pete (Pop) Brading, ex Frobisher Divn? I know he lives in France, but I don't have his current email address.

21st July

I've added a whole load  of new photo's under the heading 'Roger Bond's Collection', which may be found in Photos from the Past. There are still more to add, but I'll not give you too much excitement in one day!The attendance list for the reunion is growing, and since the last update Sandy Sanders, Pete Penwarden, Bob Jones and Tony Privett have all returned their booking forms. Many thanks for that.

Keith and I would really like the numbers to reach 50 ex-apps. There are still a number of forms to be returned,, so come on guys - lets reach the magic number!

17th July

Went round to visit Bob & Cynthia Jones last night, and they will be putting in their forms shortly. Also, I had a nice letter from Alan Brooks (Frobisher). He will not be able to come to the reunion, as he will be on holiday, but wishes us every success. Thanks for that Al.

A phone call from Sandy Sanders, to let me know that he will be coming, so the numbers are growing well. Also, very pleased to receive a phone call from Arizona! Pete Penwarden phoned for a chat, and the time just flew past - I'm sure we'll have much more to say when we meet up in September. Pete has also joined the Fisgard Association, and I'm proud to say that our series has the most members of any in the Association and we are still growing. Its a great way to keep in touch with ex-Tiffs of all series.

Incidentally, for those who wish to stay at the hotel: The special offer closes on 27th July, so if you haven't already booked, please do so as soon as possible!

14th July

MD Cannon added to 'Lest We Forget' page.Information kindly supplied by Mick  Davies via David Williamson.

13th July.

Heard today that Pete Penwarden has booked his flight, so that's one to chalk up for Froby! Not to be outdone, I've heard that Les Chantler (Hawke) will be sending in his forms when he returns from holiday.

David Hodges has got the 'professionals' in to hunt out our long lost brethren - he's already found Garth Sanders and Al Brooks  - he's now after Pete Hicks and Bob Stallard! So watch out - there's no hiding place!

Michael Field has sent me a dit for the memories page  - let's have some more please.

10th July

Thanks Dave & Moira Goodwin for your booking forms - you are on  the list!Still plenty of room, so if  you know of any more S31 hiding somewhere, dig 'em out and sign 'em up!

9th July

Receive booking forms from David and Annette Hodges today, so thanks for that. David also advised me of the death of Ron Betts (Grenville) some time ago. Ron was involved in a motorcycle and sidecar acciddent on the Fishguard road, when a car pulled out in front of him. Ron's name has been added to the Lest We Forget page.

On a lighter note, David asks if we know the whereabouts of Grant Sanders and Alan Stanley Brooks. Can anyone help?

6th July

Six more photographs of Blake's Finest, supplied from Dave Phillips' collection, added to Photos from the Past. Many thanks for those David.

Received a booking form from Mike & Marie Davis - many thanks, and Welcome!!

1st July

To celebrate our 5000th visitor, and at the start of a new month, I've changed the template for the site, as the 'book format' was a bit restrictive in showing pictures to best advantage. I think that this format is much clearer -Please let me know what you think.

Names added to S31 Hooks photo; two new pictures from David Phillips added to 'Photos from the past' page.

30th June

The original hand-written entry list has been added to the Down Memory Lane page

29th June

I had a long email from Rick Roughton today, including Mary's journal of their travels.

Rick writes: '---we had a lot of repair work on the boat and have a bit of a deadline regarding Indonesia as the paperwork is a pain but now that we have our cruising permit the clock starts ticking for three months from mid- August. We are now in Cairns and experiencing some sunshine, the first for a month. The weather has been wet, windy and cold for the Tropics (below 20C)'   It seems that we are not the only ones to be having rotten weather!

Thanks for that Rick. Good sailing!

RD Rudland's name added to AnsonNew Entry photo

28th June

Had a chat with Mick Davies, and also Mike Millis last night. They will both be sending their booking forms, so the numbers are rising! Received the form from Sid & Lyn Wareham today - thanks for that Sid - your ticket is in the post!

Sadly I have been informed of the death of AD (Alan) Randall, of Exmouth Division. His name has been added to the Lest We Forget page.

Both Stuart Millar and David Williamson have advised of the death of MD Cannon, but I don't know from which division. He doesn't feature in the class list, and may therefore have joined us later. Can anyone help? The same also applies to DJL Chapman. Does this name jog anyones memory?

27th June

Just returned from a weeks holiday, so some catching up to do! Another couple added to the attendees list on the notice board.

John Rowsell has sent me a number of photos of Fisgard days, which I've added to this site. Also, David Phillips has provided a missing name from Anson NE photo which I'll add shortly.

23rd May

We had a great night of 'Lamp Swinging' at the Golden Lion in Fareham last night.

Keith Miskin, John Rowsell, Hugh Upward,Graham Thornton, and I were enjoying a beer, when Fred Bunce (Exmouth), walked into the pub. We needed a few clues to help refresh the memory, before Fred finally had to reveal his name! What failures!. Fred now lives mostly in Spain, but had found this web site and noticed the mini reunion details on the Notice Board page. He happened to be in the area, so paid us a surprise visit. As a submariner, he was of course outnumbered by Wafu's, but I think we made him feel welcome! Thanks a lot for that Fred, it was good to see you. I've included your handsome features on the Dad's Navy page.

Thanks too for organising the evening Keith.

Chris Madden popped in later, so we had a very respectable gathering. We are hoping that Fred Flack is going to organise a 'Great Day Out in Summer' at Weymouth in July, so we'll keep you posted via the message board page.

Doug and Carol Jerram have sent their booking forms, so a big Welcome to them both, travelling from their home in France to meet up with us in September.

17th May

Had a long chat with Doug Jerram (in France) this morning - for about 35 minutes! Glad it was your phone bill Doug!

Sad to learn that Mick Garrod (Anson) had 'crossed the bar',albeit long time ago. Apparently killed in a motoring accident.

I've deleted the Survey page now,as it served its purpose. Thanks to all who used it. Any queries can be placed in the guest book or emailed to me or Keith Miskin.

John Apps suggested we lighten things up a bit! OK - so I've added a 'Down Memory Lane' page for your anecdotes. Send them to me and I'll add them to the book.

29th April 2007

Had a chat with Reg Harnett this morning - speaking about the old days and getting in touch with more folk for the reunion. Reg has just returned from the S31 reunion in New Zealand, so will have to quiz him for some photographs etc.

Reg is going to put me in contact with Peter Brading (ex-Froby), who now lives in France. It will be great to have a chat with him.

21st April 2007

Met up with Fred Flack and Graham Thornton last night at the Fisgard Barn Dance - a very mini reunion!

Tonight I've reorganised some of the pages for ease of reading.

20th April 2007

I've just posted off the booking forms, so you should receive them in the next few days. I hope you find them to your liking! If you have any queries please let me know. Don't forget also, if you know of any other members of S31 in your area, please pass on the news to them - the more the merrier. Keith and I will keep looking, and we'll keep the list open till mid August, so plenty of time yet.

I'm off to Jersey for a short break - will be back next Friday. Any queries during this time please contact Keith Miskin.

19th April 2007
I received survey forms from Pat Pattinson and Rocky Roscoe today so the numbers are increasing.  Tonight I've been printing off the booking and reservation forms for our weekend. These will be posted off in the next day or two. Fisgardian  Association members should use these forms for booking the Green & White, rather than the on in the magazine. This will help me in corrulating the S31 attendees.
I had an email from Michael Field yesterday - his pacemaker is ticking away nicely!

9th April 2007

Delighted to have received a confirmation from Tony Colyer(Anson) in Australia. Tony and his wife Maureen will be coming to the Green & White and the Meet & Greet evening on Saturday at HMS Nelson.

Keith and I have almost finished finalising the programme. We intend to send out booking forms for all events by the end of the week.

We would really appreciate it if you would complete the survey form on this site!

28th march 2007

I've had word today that we were successful in our request to hold a 'do' on Saturday night in the WOs, SRs and NCOs Mess HMS Nelson, Portsmouth.

I've updated the 50th Anniversary page with a proposed programme of events. Further details will be added as we get more details.

Great to hear from Peter Hooton - I'm pleased to note that this site is getting people together! Great.

21st March 2007

I received a most interesting email from Rick Roughton (Blake) this morning. Rick and his wife Mary are currently circumnavigating the globe in their yacht Capensissa, currently in Brisbane. As they will be off Indonesia in September Rick regrets that he will miss the reunion. Guess that's quite an excuse! I'll add Rick's picture to Dad's Navy

19th March 2007

First, I offer an unreserved apology for the erroneous announcement of the passing of J H 'Harry' Wright, which I forwarded to the Fisgard Association. The message brings to mind  Mark Twain's famous words, 'Reports of my death are highly exaggerated.' David Phillips spoke to Harry today - see guestbook entry. I'm sure we all wish Harry all the very best.

I have spoken to Roger Trigg of Exmouth Division, and he is looking forward to meeting everyone. Pete Woodbridge is another possible, although a planned tour of China may stand in the way!

16th March 2007

I've just added a picture of Exmouth Division New Entries to the Photos from the past gallery. I've been trying to locate a copy for ages, and today Tony Privett kindly emailed one to me. Thanks to David Phillips for giving him the nudge! Two people missing from the picture are Messrs SR Fuller and GM Sedgwick, both of whom were laid low with the dreaded Asian 'flu!

Doug Jerram phoned from his home in France, and gave me some useful leads, so I'll be making more calls tonight. Also the email address of Ric Roughton (Blake), who is I understand cruising warmer climes in his yacht. Watch this space - I'll maybe get an update on that.

Some sad news is that Doug informs me AF (Taff) Wyatt  (Frobisher) crossed the bar a couple of years ago.

15th March 2007

I've just been speaking to Ferdie Redmond, of Collingwood Division. I'm sure it is all of 45 years since we last spoke - yet we only live about 15 miles from each other - incredible!

I'm delighted to say that he is keen to join us in September, so our numbers are growing steadily. Collingwood are now leading the attendance table with 8 people, closely followed by Grenville with 7. Our combined total is close on 50. We still have a long way to go - remember we started with over 200!

13th March 2007

I believe today is the start of the New Zealand reunion at the Bay of Islands - so a big CONGRATULATIONS to you guys out there. Drop us a note and we'll put on the site.

A couple of photos of Exmouth Division added to Photos from the Past page.

I received a letter from Doug Jerram today. He lives in France, and unfortunately is not on the web. He is very keen for he and his wife to join us in September.

Don't forget to fill in the survey form on this site please - it would be nice to have your intentions!

I should receive confirmation of our Saturday evening booking this week. Watch this space for details!

11th March 2007

Added 1958 Softball team picture to Photos from the past page.

7th March 2007

Met up with Keith Miskin, Len Borrowdale,Hugh Upward and Brian Harmsworth last night for a beer or two and a recall of old memories! Very nice too!

I've added Hugh and Brian to the Dad's Navy collection.

6th March 2007

Updated the list of those attending the weekend reunion.

Delighted to say that Brian Sarah has made contact, and is keen to meet everyone at the Reunion. Brian has given me info on Doug Jerram (Exmouth). I've written, so I'll let you know the result!

Mini Reunion tonight at the Queen's Head Titchfield @ 7:30.

4th March

Friends forever page added

3rd March 2007

We're up and running on http://www.tiffs4ever.com/  which seems to be working fine. Today I've added Dave Goodwin's picture to the Dads Navy album - very smart too. Dave is conductor of the band, and also writes and arranges band music. Check him out on http://www.brecklandbrass.co.uk/

Dave has been in touch with Brian Sarah,(Exmouth).Give me a call Brian!

1st March 2007. St David's Day.

I've just purchased the rights to tiffs4ever.com so we will no longer be dependent on adverts to keep this going. I've also purchased additional bandwidth, as the site has become so popular that the allocated amount was soon exceeded. Great to know its used!

I believe it will take a day or two before the new address kicks in, but if you can't find me on the freewebs site, go to http://www.tiffs4ever.com/ and that should do the trick

22nd February 2007

John Rowsell (Hawke) added to Photos from the Past, and the current John added to Dad's Navy - thanks John, see you on 6th March.

21st February 2007

20th February 2007

I seem to have 'lost' all previous entries in this page for some reason, so a fresh start.

I've reorganised the 'History of Fisgard page' to include an album presentation of Roger Bond's photo visit to the Fisgard site. This makes it easier to view, and gives better clarity to the photos.

Similarly, I have added an album to the 'Photos from the past' page, showing all the new entry pictures. This allows them to be amplified, helping identification of the young sprogs!

For the old lags, I've put Dad's Navy photos into an album.

Menu of the reunion dinner is now shown on the 50th Anniversary page.

Message from Dave Goodwin (Anson). He is going to attend the reunion - so welcome Dave
